Paula Politis Attends Ohio Pharmacists Association Annual Conference

2013 May 2

Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) pharmacy student Paula Politis of Youngstown, Ohio, attended the 135th Annual Conference of the Ohio Pharmacists Association, April 12-14, 2013, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus.

The three-day conference provided pharmacists with valuable information to improve patient health. Pharmacists not only gained critical knowledge about new drugs on the market, how to help patients better manage their drug therapy, and proper use of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, they also learned the most recent information about managing high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, and medications in older adults.

In addition to participating in conference events, NEOMED students and faculty presented the outcomes of their work during poster sessions as part of the event's Ohio Research Forum.

Politis, a fourth-year pharmacy student, was part of a team that presented a poster titled, "A Student-Led Initiative to Incorporate Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services Into the Workflow at a Community Pharmacy," as part of a session on MTM: Student Pharmacist Engagement. Politis is a graduate of Canfield High School .

The conference also addressed the number of current issues pertinent to health care professionals, such as how the Affordable Care Act will impact Medicare prescription drug benefits, as well as legislative and regulatory updates for pharmacists.

"Pharmacists attend educational seminars to keep abreast of important health issues and to meet their yearly continuing education (CE) requirements. The OPA Annual Conference and Trade Show is widely known as the best and largest gathering of pharmacists, future pharmacists and pharmacy decision makers in the Midwest. Attendance not only fulfills CE requirements, but it also demonstrates a clear, serious commitment to the pharmacy profession," said Ernest Boyd, OPA executive director. "In a time of economic crisis, OPA is proud to offer the value-added resources that keep pharmacists ahead of the curve."
