Cincinnati's Kevin Dong awarded with prestigious national award for hematology

2016 May 27

Kevin Dong, a second-year medicine student at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio, is one of only five students nationally to receive the 2016-2017 American Society of Hematology (ASH) Physician-Scientist-Career-Development Award. The program seeks to help students attending medical school in the United States or Canada gain experience in hematology research while being mentored by an ASH member. Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood.

From July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, Dong will be conducting research using a $42,000 monetary award to cover his expenses. Dong's project, Modelling Cytogenically Normal Acute Myeloid Leukimia, will contribute to the continued growth in hematology research.

"We, as a health sciences university, recognize the importance of developing innovative, collaborative and curious physicians to not only lead the profession as health care providers but also to solve clinical questions through dynamic research," said Jeffrey Susman, M.D., vice president of health affairs and community health and dean of the College of Medicine at NEOMED. "Mr. Dong has the maturity, intelligence and drive to be just the type of physician-scientist needed to perform such work."

The American Society of Hematology is the world's largest professional society of hematologists. For more than 50 years the Society has promoted research, patient care, education, training and advocacy in hematology.

For more than 40 years, NEOMED has worked in collaboration with its educational, clinical and research partners to successfully train health professionals and medical researchers who serve and impact the region and beyond. The University trains students in a team-based, interprofessional environment and offers doctor of medicine (M.D.) and doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degrees, in addition to master's and doctoral degrees and research opportunities in other medical areas.
